Happy New Year!
SIPES San Antonio Chapter meeting for January will be held Thursday, 19 January at 11:30 a.m., in the Petroleum Club of San Antonio.
We are excited to have Dr. Julie M. Bloxson, Associate Professor at Stephen F. Austin as our speaker.
Dr Bloxson's presentation is titled "Salty Seismic Issues: Distinguishing and Interpreting Salt Suture Zones in the Louann with the aid of XRF"
ABSTRACT
The Jurassic Louann Salt is a massive evaporite body in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) with no modern analog. Subsequent salt deformation has created diapirs, domes, welds, and other salt structures, causing complexities and difficulties in unraveling the history of the formation. Oftentimes, multiple salt bodies collide, creating suture zones with anomalous lithologies and pressures. These frequently are indistinguishable in seismic. Here, we will talk about using XRF and XRD to characterize the Louann Salt and two of ists suture zones near the Sigsbee Escarpment. These are then correlated to the well log data and finally tied to seismic, where the suture zones are mapped across the diapir.
This promises to be an exciting and informative talk, and I look forward to seeing you all next week.
Please let Thomas Kirby (SIPES Chapter Chairman) know if you plan to attend, so they can prepare. Email Thomas at kirbyandassoc@gmail.com or call 210-908-9913 to RSVP.
