Abstract:
The Brackish Resources Aquifer Characterization System (BRACS) program of the Texas Water Development Board maps brackish aquifers to better understand water resources in the state. We completed a study of the Wilcox, Carrizo, Queen City, Sparta, and Yegua aquifers (oldest to youngest) in Central Texas, and published a report entitled “Brackish groundwater in aquifers of the Upper Coastal Plains, Central Texas” in December 2020. This presentation is an overview of our mapping efforts including mapping stratigraphy, lithology, and water quality from more than 5,000 well records. Data and interpretations used in the study are included in the publicly available BRACS database. To map water quality, we utilized public water quality measurements from water wells in the outcrop and less saline portions of the aquifers. However, to map salinity in the deeper, brackish portions of the aquifers where there are few measured water quality samples, we estimated TDS from resistivity logs using the Rwa minimum method. GIS datasets resulting from this study are available at: http://www.twdb.texas.gov/groundwater/bracs/studies/UCPC/index.asp.
